The Crimson Petal and the White (2011)

This miniseries tells the story of a prostitute called Sugar in 1870s England. It’s based on Michel Faber‘s 2002 novel. Romola Garai is amazing as Sugar and Chris O’Dowd, who plays aristocratic lover Rackham, couldn’t be more subtly horrid a person.

This is serious good drama: the surroundings are Dickensianly dirty and wretched, the most unlikely people are suddenly kind and most characters act out-of-character just a couple of times, making them terribly convincing.
